Hello Clinton Township School Community, As a child, my friends and I would often devise schemes to make money to buy candy. Part of those schemes often involved lemonade or kool-aid stands. We would gleefully walk away with our extra three dollars and share our candy purchase, never realizing that the whole endeavor was subsidized by our parents. That is why it was so amazing to have participated as a shopper in the Clinton Township TREP$ program on the evening of April 27 at the middle school. There were over 70 middle school vendors who set up booths along the hallways and in the gymnasium to sell baked goods, crafts, homemade products, and upcycled household items. Each vendor learned about the cost of creating their wares, setting a selling price, market research, and the other overhead costs associated with running a business. Over 300 parents, siblings, school staff, and community members shopped throughout the evening and as a result every single business turned a profit. This experience is just one small example of what makes Clinton Township so amazing. This program, along with the law fair and various other learning opportunities, are enabled by one of our beloved CTMS teachers, Diane Cormican. For a middle school to instill in students entrepreneurial lessons that are often not taught until college or later, this program not only gives our students access to the world of business, it also empowers them to be self starters in the future. W h e n w e t h i n k a b o u t w h a t m a k e s a community great, there are a lot of factors: the people, those who govern, the volunteers, businesses, and those who staff the public and community agencies. However, what truly makes a community great is its willingness to support the schools and invest in our youth. When this happens, our youth gets opportunities and advantages that are deposits towards the future of our society. As a new Superintendent, I continue to be impressed not only by what is seen in our schools, but also by the community's efforts to model the values that we want out of our future leaders. When we prepare them with an entrepreneurial spirit at a young age we are giving them the opportunities to make future change. While they may invest in candy as kids, as adults they will invest their time, energy and resources in continuing to make the community better. This is just one more reason why we are so fortunate to have a great school district that is preparing our students to be the best it can be. – Sincerely, Dr. Melissa Stager A MESSAGE FROM DR.
