The State, City of Bordentown and D&R Greenway joined together to save this last large parcel of open space in the City, along the Delaware River, before it was lost to warehouse development. Hear the story of preservation and the commitment to the land that was present in Native Americans who occupied these lands up to 13,000 years ago, to the last landowner, a Catholic mission. Learn about the new museum that will tell these stories. Pat Coleman, Friends for the Abbott Marshlands, will join Linda and include information from the Native American curriculum developed for the Abbott Marshlands. By: Charlotte Vitale - Fitness Trainer & Recent Kinesiology Graduate of the University of Rhode Island Once winter begins, many of our usual outdoor activities are interrupted by the cold temperatures and snowy conditions. On the upside, our favorite snow sports are finally back in season! Skiing and snowboarding are great opportunities to get outdoors during the cold, while also adding variety into your typical exercise regimens. These activities provide a handful of fitness benefits such as enhancing lower body and core strength, strengthening ankle and knee joints, improving aerobic and muscular endurance and improving overall balance! They also have great mental benefits, like improving mood, reaction time and decision making. Overall, skiing and snowboarding are fantastic ways to get outdoors while benefiting your body in a host of ways. As with any activity, there are various ways to safely prepare yourself before engaging in these winter hobbies. First off, it is crucial to make sure all your equipment is in good condition and appropriately sized. Having skis or a snowboard that are too small or large can put unnecessary stress on your muscles and joints. Preparation, on the other hand, involves a combination of strength, cardio and technique training to fortify your body for the physical demands of these activities. Exercises such as squats, lunges and weight bearing core workouts will strengthen the same muscles in your lower body and abdominals that are targeted during skiing and snowboarding. Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi are all forms of exercise that can improve balance through steady and gradual movements, while running, cycling or even jump roping will enhance cardiovascular endurance. Whether you're new to winter sports or a seasoned vet, the most important thing is to stay safe while having fun!
