While all that learning is taking place, third graders still make time to have some fun! Children are looking forward to the 100th Day of School and exchanging cards for Valentine's Day! In ELA, 4th grade students are studying nonfiction text. We are learning about nonfiction text features and text structures and applying them to independent reading. Later in the month, students will be researching a topic and writing a nonfiction article. During Social Studies class, students are working on a Project Based Unit where they are learning about the three waves of immigration to the United States. In Math, students are learning about factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers. In Science, 4th graders are learning how organisms process information. In this unit of study, the students will learn all about the different parts of the eye and how they work. To culminate the unit, the students will build their own model of an eye out of a ping pong ball and other materials of their choice. Fifth grade mathematicians have been working with adding and subtracting decimals. They will expand this to multiplication and division in the coming weeks. The students have been learning the skill of "close" reading when solving more complex, multi-step word problems each day. Researching the Earth's spheres and how they interact is the focus in science. Students will be using their research to create a presentation for other students to watch. Fifth grade readers have enjoyed learning about and discussing social issues in stories they are reading. Some of our writers will be working through the process of writing a literary essay over the next several weeks while others are learning important research skills. They will all have the opportunity to work on these skills throughout the year. Clinton Township Middle School Relay For Life: The 12th Annual CTMS Relay for Life is being planned for Friday, March 11 from 6:00-8:00 pm. This is a fun family fundraiser, and everyone's invited! Our school community has raised over $375,000 in the fight against cancer, and all proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. Law Fair/Law Adventure Mock Trial Competition: We have five groups who have written and submitted their law cases to the New Jersey Bar Foundation. This annual mock trial competition is a highlight of our CTMS Enrichment program, and the students placed in the top 5% in the State for the last two years. Good luck, law students! fifteen minutes, and power word practice. Students will learn more advanced phoneme awareness by blending, segmenting, and manipulating the letter sounds. In Writing, "How To" Writing-writers teach others how to do something through pictures and words. In Math, kindergartners will learn more about representing, counting and writing numbers 11-19. In Science and Social Studies, students will explore Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day, Presidents Day, Dental Health, Friendship Building! First graders at PMG are having fun and building friendships each day. Students have been busy becoming Non-Fiction Experts in both reading and writing. Students have learned to be superstar Non-Fiction readers. In writing, our authors are working on teaching others by writing their very own non-fiction books. This month will be a very fun and exciting month celebrating the 100th Day of School, Valentine's day and the Global School Day of Play. In math, students are learning about relationships of addition and subtraction facts and are starting to learn all about place value. In science, first graders will become astronomers as we put on our spacesuits and learn about the sun, moon, and stars. Second graders at PMG are going to be challenged to learn 2-digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. This will prepare our students for 3-digit addition and subtraction. We are learning about Great Leaders and their contributions. It is a time of great growth in second grade! Round Valley School New Grade Level Happenings Third Grade has been busy learning about Early European Explorers. Students were interested to learn how explorers made lasting impressions on language, culture, trade, and religion and that the impacts of this exploration are still evident today. In Math, students continue to learn multiplication strategies and have added the Distributive Property and the Associative Property of Multiplication to their math toolboxes. We want students to be flexible mathematical thinkers, so we're teaching and learning multiple ways to solve problems in the hopes that at least one will resonate with each child. Readers are learning how to chunk information as a way to find the main idea, as well as identify key supporting details. This reading technique assists with writing too.
