Fall is the time to revitalize your lawn. Through the summer, your
lawn weakens due to soil compaction, shallower root system, depletion
of stored nutrients and other adverse environmental conditions. Two
thirds of your yearly nitrogen fertilizer should be applied to your lawn
in the fall. As the weather cools and turf growth increases, a consistent
supply of nitrogen helps to stimulate lateral growth, root depth and turf
density assuming all other nutrients are adequate. Fall soil aeration will
also benefit turf health and vigor.
Carbohydrates created and stored in the root system in the fall
are utilized the following spring. Late fall fertilization provides early
spring green up without the need for additional early spring fertilization.
Additional early spring fertilizer only serves to stimulate top growth at the
expense of stored nutrients. When fertilizer is applied prematurely in the
spring, nutrients stored the previous fall are depleted sooner than would
otherwise be utilized, causing earlier turf weakening.
Spring fertilizer should usually be applied later in the spring
when turf shows signs of yellowing or slowed growth. At that time only
a light application of nitrogen is warranted to maintain turf health and
development.
