If you are an adult like I am, the answer would be "No." Why
would we look at our parents feet? They are our parents – they can take
care of themselves. What if you have older parents and they are now senior
citizens? They may have difficulty walking, or cutting their own toenails.
There are many things your parents don't want to tell you
about. They may not have good memory or may have dementia. There
will come a time when you have to take care of your parents. With this
new responsibility, you will have to look at their feet. You will need to
take off their shoes and socks. You might find out that they are not cutting
their toenails or they might have an infection. They might not be wearing
appropriate shoes. As people get older they need to wear good supportive
shoes. Your mother needs to put the dressy shoes away.
Eighty percent of Senior Citizens have fungus toenails. These
toenails are thick and yellow and are very difficult to cut. Many older
patients are unable to cut them so they just ignore them. They are also very
embarrassed so they won't tell you they need their nails trimmed. Most
times this service will be covered by a Podiatrist. Your parent might also
have circulation issues or Diabetes which also indicate that they should
not cut their own toenails.
Your mother or father may have balance issues or have fallen.
A Podiatrist can evaluate them and get the proper help that they need. For
