On December 5, and also December 20 at 1:00 pm, the internationally renowned fiber artist Cynthia Alberto will be on the Hunterdon Art Museum's Toshiko Takaezu Terrace, for an outdoor dance open to the public for participation and observation. In this event, entitled, Techno Love Activation, Alberto will allow children who would like to volunteer the opportunity to wear her woven fiber artworks called "Cocoons." The artist will also teach a short, simple dance choreographed specifically for the "Cocoons" – heavy, blanket-like textiles which drape over the body, covering the head, but allowing partial sight through the loose warp and weft of thick cotton and synthetic cables. The artist describes the intense liberating experience of being inside each "Cocoon" as like wearing "a mask from the surrounding environment…[such] that users are able to let go and move more freely without the fear of judgment. The result is an inclusive wearable piece of art which evokes a sense of playfulness, reflection, peace, and escape." The artist reclaimed the material used to make the "Cocoons" from a MoMA PS1 installation, Weaving the Courtyard, by Studio Escobedo Soliz, thereby suggesting a conversation with that installation. As such, Alberto's "Cocoons" invoke the categories of installation, dance, social art, fiber art, and fashion, but explode and overlap their boundaries. Pre-registration is NOT required for this event series. This is a first-come-first-serve opportunity. F r e e V i r t u a l a r t i s t l e C t u r e s !
