Fertilize with a fertilizer containing nitrogen after your last mow- ing. Nitrogen applied at this time will help your lawn to develop a stronger, deeper root system, produce and store carbohydrates (the turf's food source) for the following season. The root system continues to develop until the ground freezes. The results of this application will be realized the following spring with a stronger, healthier lawn. New Jersey does not allow homeowners to apply fertilizer containing nitrogen after November 15th or on frozen ground. For Your Garden: Test your garden soil to insure adequate nutrient supply for next season. This becomes more important if green vegetation removed from the garden is not composted and returned to the garden. Once tested, any required nutrients can be added and the garden rototilled. The garden can then be seeded with winter (cover crop) rye. The rye will produce deep roots to minimize soil compaction and sequester nitrogen which might otherwise be lost to erosion or leached below the root zone. The rye can be rototilled into the garden the following spring, recycling the nutrients and organic matter.
