Constantly changing decisions. Even as I submit this article in mid- August, there are public and private K-12s and colleges changing from hybrid or in-person models to remote. Did you know 20% of Harvard's incoming class deferred their admission for a year, yet other college registrations are up? What does this mean for your student next year? Testing. Should you find a test to take or not? This is the most often asked question and the answer depends on many factors. The PSAT will hopefully run in October, juniors should start prepping for it. I was also just asked if taking the test in a lower socioeconomic area results in a higher score (absolutely NOT). I am always amazed with the misinformation out there! College Selection. With less visits occurring in person, you need an expert to guide you and suggest colleges based on your student's specific needs and wants. There are more than 3,000 colleges, and you may not be able to visit most of the schools prior to applying that are on your final list. At least, contact the regional rep for the schools you are interested in and say hello. More schools are offering and highly suggesting interviews – take one! I am currently accepting new clients (9th to 11th graders). I work with no more than 20 students each year to keep it personal and focused. You will be thankful to have worked with me when your son or daughter is DONE with their applications before senior year gets underway. I give guidance regarding testing, financial aid, picking best fit schools and careers. When you use my services, I increase the likelihood your student will graduate in 4 years, be happy, AND not transfer. This will potentially save you $20-60,000 by not landing in with the rest (majority) of students that DO NOT graduate in 4 years. Managing the process, offering new ideas, keeping you on track and most importantly, empowering your student while keeping the stress down in the home is what I do best. More than half of my former clients stated I not only met, but exceeded their expectations in their exit survey. – Nicole Smith, Next Step College Advising N h h S G R A D U A T E J U L I A N A G O N z A L E z - R I V A S S E L L S A N D D O N A T E S M A S K S I hope you and your families are all safe during this pandemic. I started making masks as soon as people started wearing them and did a lot of research to make a unique, adjustable, safe, and very comfortable mask. Since people will need to wear them as we get back to going out again, I think they're very important to preventing or reducing a second wave. I am selling them on my new Etsy shop and, because my training in Girl Scouts taught me to give back to the community, I am donating a mask to the hospital for every one I sell. My Etsy shop link is: lianarivasdesigns.etsy.com. We are happy to offer FREE non-contact local pickup. You can apply the coupon code: LOCALPICKUP at checkout to take advantage of this opportunity. As the COVID-19 pandemic has transformed all of our lives, many people have sought new ways to help each other. Joining South Branch Emergency Services could be YOUR way to make a difference. The need for volunteers is great, and all you need to fulfill that need is the heart to help neighbors who need emergency care, rescue services or hospital transit. If you have that heart, we will show you how to help. The training you will receive includes learning to protect yourself while helping others, covering everything from preventing the spread of viruses – including COVID-19 – to how to safely lift a patient. COVID-19 precautions, such as wearing masks, are observed during training and during response. You will also learn specialized CPR and first aid, after which you will qualify to assist EMTs on ambulance calls, gaining experience that will help prepare you for the EMT course and exams. From fear to – let's face it – a little boredom, this pandemic has been hard on us all. Helping others helps us get through it, and we know it can help you get through it, too. Join us! Please visit: www.SBES365.org to learn more or fill out a volunteer inquiry form. Interested, but not certain? Reach out, and let's talk! "A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning." ~ Brad Henry
