Lime and fertilizer based on soil test recommendations, applied in the early fall promotes root growth and turf density. A strong deep root system and healthy dense top growth improve drought, disease and insect tolerance the following season. Experts agree that 2/3 of the nitrogen applied to a lawn should be applied in the fall. Fall is also the optimum time to over seed your lawn. New grass established in the early fall has time to establish in preparation for the following growing season. If your lawn requires broadleaf weed control, post emergent broadleaf weed control products should be applied 2-3 weeks prior to over seeding. Depending on the density of your lawn, there are different methods used to incorporate new seed. For lawns with less than 50% turf cover, slice seeding may the best choice. A slice seeder slices the ground and creates furrows (rows) on 2 – 3 inch centers. It then drops the seed in these furrows. For lawns with more than 50% cover, core aeration and over seeding may be a more cost effective option.
