Many students new to Yoga are surprised to learn that the physical practice of Yoga requires strength and the ability to actively engage our muscles as well as flexibility - in other words, balanced action and alignment. Balanced alignment is the body in optimal structural placement for the flow of the body's functions and for the best possible positioning of its architecture for the engagement and extension of our musculature and from that, the flow of vital energy. Muscular engagement creates stability, strength and physical integration and generally moves from the periphery to the core. Muscular extension or active flexibility moves in the opposite direction, from the core lines of the body extending outward, ultimately accessing space and extension from connection and engagement rather than disconnect and hyperextension. Because muscle contraction creates a boundary and support for active extension to flow out from, we optimize our strength and flexibility and as a result achieve balanced action, thus, mirroring the pulsation of the life force in every living thing, which constantly draws in and expands back out.
