Why is "one size fits all" a down-and-out lie? I don't know how tall "all" is or how much "all" weighs, but her dimensions are totally unlike mine. I'd really like to meet "all" one day. Why, when I try to lose a few pounds, do my slacks feel as snug as ever but my rings get loose? Why does that lady select the express lane at Bishop's and then pay for two lemons and a box of lime Jello with a check or credit card? Couldn't she have stopped at an ATM and had a few bucks in her wallet? Why do I spend countless hours trying to open pill bottles, plastic- wrapped utensils and vacuum-packed tools with scissors and knives when I'm too old to exert all that energy? I wish they would consider "Elderly Lady Packaging". Why do I see racks of short-sleeved shirts and seersucker shorts in Macy's in mid-February and those same racks bulging with sweatsuits in July? What can you expect in a society that sells Christmas ornaments before Halloween? Why do I pack and fill a large suitcase for an overnight at my daughter's house an hour away when my granddaughter actually went to Europe for three weeks with only a backpack? Why did I remain slim and trim for at least four decades when I'd barely heard about calories? Once I discovered how nasty and unreasonable they were I began a steady weight gain that refuses to end. Why do I digest an assortment of multi-colored pills daily – some as large as a small rodent – in order to stay alive and kicking? Would I make it to 93 years without them? (Will I make it to 93 years WITH them?) Is everyone out of step but me? The meeting is open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Armstrong will trace the development of Prohibition in New Jersey - how it happened, its enforcement problems and its ultimate repeal. Its unforeseen consequences - the increased size of government and the development of organized crime - will be addressed. Also in March, in preparation for the THS Tag Sale scheduled for April 25, the Historical Society will be collecting donated items at the Carriage House, 5 James Street, on Saturday, March 28, 9:00 am-1:00 pm. The Society is seeking quality antiques, furniture, china, dishes, housewares, garden items and more. No books, children's items/toys, records, or clothes can be accepted. Electronics and electric items older than 3 years are also unacceptable. Volunteers will be at the Carriage House to receive the items and to ensure they are clean and in good repair.
