Fact or Fallacy: Synthetic fertilizer kills microbes in the soil. Both
organic and synthetic fertilizer support the biological decomposition of
organic residues in the lawn, garden and compost bin by supplying microbes
with the energy they require.
Microbes are the living part of the organic content of a soil. They
are responsible for the breakdown of plant and animal residues, improve soil
tilth thru aggregation and produce plant available nutrients. Plants do not
care whether the source of their food is organic or synthetic. Once broken
down by soil microbes, it's all the same.
Multiple field experiments and studies completed over two to ten
year periods confirmed that when applied as recommended by a soil test;
synthetic fertilizer had no negative effect on beneficial bacterial populations
and actually increased beneficial fungal populations.
