Fall is the time to improve your lawn. Test your soil early to insure a
healthy soil environment. If you anticipate Fall over-seeding, eliminate broadleaf
weeds 3-4 weeks prior to seeding. Seeding and fertilizing around Labor Day
will provide the optimum time necessary to establish new grass before winter.
Remember, soil, seed contact is critical when establishing new grass. If your lawn
is 50% or more existing grass, over-seeding in combination with soil aeration
is a very effective means of introducing new seed to your lawn. If existing grass
cover is below 50%, slice seeding becomes a more effective means of introducing
new seed, especially in combination with soil aeration.
Watch for grub damage at this time of year. New populations can be
voracious and their damage sometimes goes unnoticed due to dry weather
conditions. If warranted, apply a lawn insecticide containing trichlorfon (Dylox)
to control existing grub populations. Note that these products must be watered
in to be effective. Lawn insecticides have no effect on new seed establishment.
