By: Gigi Bruggeman – W.I.T.S. Certified Personal Trainer Interval training has been proven to be the most effective mode of exercise to burn fat. It also improves a person's aerobic fitness, blood pressure and endurance capacity. Individuals with Diabetes, Heart disease, Parkinson's disease and Pulmonary disease will benefit greatly from participating in an interval exercise program. There are several ways to make your cardiovascular exercise in the gym a lot more fun, efficient and interesting with interval training. Begin with an easy 3 to 5 minute warm up on a stationary bike, elliptical, rower or any other piece of cardio equipment. Then pick any of the following interval training methods below. Method 1: Go for one minute at higher speed or intensity, slow down for two minutes. Repeat. Method 2: Alternate - going all out for 30 seconds and slower for the next 30 seconds. Repeat. Method 3 = "Pyramid": 10 seconds fast, followed by 10 seconds slow. 20 seconds fast, followed by 20 seconds slow. 30 seconds fast, followed by 30 seconds slow. 20 seconds fast, followed by 20 seconds slow. 10 seconds fast, followed by 10 seconds slow. Repeat. Method 4 = "Tabata Training": Eight rounds of high intensity for 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off - a total of four minutes. Repeat if needed. Method 5 = "10-20-30 Training": Exercise lightly for 30 seconds, exercise moderately for 20 seconds, go at top speed or all out for 10 seconds. Repeat this five times, rest for two minutes and repeat again five more times. These methods will certainly keep boredom out of your cardiovascular exercise. Please note: the high intensity exercise is only appropriate for low risk individuals or moderate to high risk individuals who have medical clearance.
