In a continual effort to help residents protect their families and community, Safe Communities Coalition of Hunterdon County, in partnership with Law Enforcement, and the Prosecutor's and Sheriff's Offices, are urging residents to take part in National DEA Take- Back Day, held on Saturday, April 27 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and health issue in our community. Prescription and over-the-counter medicines in the home are highly susceptible to misuse. Homes that store medicines in easily accessible locations are at even higher risk. County teens revealed misusing medicines for recreational purposes; the majority of those drugs came from a friend or family member's medicine cabinet (Narcotics Focus Group). "The risk is greater than we can afford and if we all do our part to get these medicines safely disposed or secured in the home, we can reduce addiction", said Rocky Schwartz, Rx Chair of Safe Communities Coalition in Hunterdon, referencing data released by Drugfree. org, which illuminated that 90% of adults with Substance Use Disorder started using in their teen years. With addiction at epidemic levels, recent statistics revealed an alarming rate of teen overdoses, which have more than doubled from 1999 to 2015 and continue to rise (CDC, 2017). "These numbers reflect only a percentage of the opioid-related overdoses and deaths sweeping the nation, and our communities have not been spared by this growing crisis," said Amy Menes, Project Director of the Regional Coalition. "Our Counties have unfortunately witnessed a number of fatal overdoses this year, much of which stemmed from medicine misuse leading to heroin. These are our friends, neighbors, and children. We need to take every opportunity and precaution to ensure their safety, starting with regularly cleaning out our medicine cabinets", said Lesley Gabel, Regional Coalition Director.
