Everybody can have their toes or feet feel numb at some point in their life. This numbness usually is temporary and goes away by itself. It could be that you slept wrong, because of shoes not fitting properly, or from trying to wear shoes for the wrong purpose. The most important thing is that this numbness goes away. So what happens when your numbness doesn't go away by itself? You could have other systemic or contributing factors that can cause numbness. This numbness is usually called neuropathy and one of the most common systemic diseases that can cause neuropathy is diabetes. You should not wait to get evaluated by a podiatrist if you do have diabetes and neuropathy. There are many different treatments, both topically and orally, depending upon your severity. Another common cause for numbness in your feet and toes is related to your back. Many people who have herniated discs or sciatica can suffer from chronic numbness. You would need to be evaluated by a specialist for this problem. There are additional treatments that a podiatrist can provide for you that can reduce some of the symptoms, such as custom made arch supports called orthotics that can help re-balance your feet and legs. There are many other causes for numbness in your feet. A podiatrist can do specialized tests to determine the severity of this neuropathy, and then move ahead with the proper treatment. If you have any foot problems, issues and questions, please contact Howard J. Tzorfas, D.P.M. at 908.236.6999, or visit: www.DrTzorfas.com.
