We have many new volunteer opportunities, including: • Developing a social media presence for the museum • Program development including open hearth cooking program development and programs and activities for museum tours for school children or scout troops • Helping curate the museum's collections • Designing and sewing costumes for docents and special events • Acting as a docent for bimonthly tours from May to September • Helping prepare food for events • Environmental Projects including helping create a colonial herb garden and building fencing around the gardens • Providing vocal or instrumental music for events • Historic barn and springhouse renovations critically needed to save buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries The Union Forge Heritage Association (UFHA) manages the Solitude Heritage Museum at the historic 1760 Turner House on Van Syckels Rd in Hampton, NJ near Spruce Run Reservoir. The mission of the UFHA is to help preserve and protect the rich history and natural environment of Hunterdon County. The UFHA hosts a variety of events at the 1760 Turner House: a Victorian Tea, a Victorian Mourning event, a Forged with Fire blacksmith show, an Antique Firearm Show, lectures about colonial herb gardens and Victorian terrariums, as well as tours of the museum. The UFHA also manages a number of environmental projects on the museum grounds including the creation of a pollinator meadow and the development of an extension of the Taylor Steelworkers Historic Greenway Trail for hiking. The 1760 Turner House was in a severe state of disrepair and in danger of being demolished in 2012. Over a six year period, volunteers with the UFHA have turned the once dilapidated property into an historical site of interest, but there is still much work to be done. It is an exciting time for the property and there are many opportunities to become involved in and help manage projects to expand the museum's offerings of events as well as continue renovations to the property. We're looking for anyone interested in taking part in this process whether they have just a few hours to help bake or act as a docent or if they are looking for a major project that would be suitable for a Girl Scout Gold Award, Eagle Scout Award or just because they have an interest in history or the environment. Please join us! For more information, please contact the UFHA at: UFHANJ@HOTMAIL.COM. The Union Forge Heritage Association is a 501 (c)(3) tax exempt non-profit organization incorporated in 2002.
