The disease damages central vision, limiting a person's ability to read and recognize faces. To keep your eyes healthy follow the recommendations below: • Get regular comprehensive medical eye exams. AMD often has no early warning signs, so getting regular comprehensive eye exams is critical to diagnosing and treating AMD in its early stages. • Quit smoking. If you smoke, you are twice as likely to develop macular degeneration compared with a nonsmoker. • Know your family's eye health history. You have a 60 percent chance of developing the condition if a close family member has the disease. • Eat a diet rich in omega-3s and low saturated fat. Studies have shown that people who had a reduced risk of AMD had diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish. • Exercise regularly. Regular exercise can benefit your eyes. Exercising three times a week reduced the risk of developing wet AMD over 15 years by 70 percent. • MPOD Testing. Nutrient levels of lutein and zeaxanthin can be measured to ensure you are getting an adequate amount to prevent vision loss. • Maculogix Testing. Damage of the photoreceptors is the first sign that you have AMD. This testing can determine if you have the disease BEFORE it can be seen under a microscope. This allows earlier intervention to protect eyes from loss of vision. • Genetic Testing. 60% of AMD is inherited. Testing is available to determine the risk of developing the disease.
