Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness in the United
States. When glaucoma is treated in its early stages, vision loss can be
prevented. Yet, studies show that more than half of glaucoma patients do not
adhere to their prescribed treatment plans due to factors including difficulty
in applying eye drops, lack of medication education and forgetfulness. In
support of Glaucoma Awareness Month this January optometrists, along with
the American Optometric Association, are providing patients with tips to help
them overcome medication challenges:
• Put a reminder on your phone, keep a log of when medications were
used and using medication the same time each day can help you to remember
• Make sure you are properly instilling drops by creating a pocket with
your lower lid, tipping your head back and putting drops in.
Then close (don't blink) your eyes.
• Discuss any concerns you have with your eyecare professional including
cost of medications, problems with installation or problems remembering
to take medication. We want to know and we want to help you to make sure
we are doing everything we can to preserve your vision.
The American Optometric Association recommends that all people
get an eye exam by age 40, especially those who have a higher
risk of glaucoma. To learn more about glaucoma, visit the public
education website at: www.ThinkAboutYourEyes.org. For more
