3 J a n u a r y 2 0 1 9 Carol Beder's Having been born in the 1960's, I find it hard to wrap my head around the fact that we are entering the year 2-0-1-9. I remember speculating about the turn of the millennium when I was a child and found it quite unbelievable. For that matter, our fourth grade teacher read to us George Orwell's book, "1984" which was, according to Wikipedia,"set in the year 1984 when most of the world population have become victims of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance and propaganda." Hmmm. That teacher was (sadly) relieved of his position a year later and eventually the year 1984 came and went relatively easily, except for the normal ups and downs of my high school senior year. Wish I could say the same for this time period. Here is my wish list for 2019 is, in no particular order. (Forgive me, but I feel a lot of them need exclamation points): World Peace! Okay, admittedly, that should always be #1. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem obtainable (and I tend to be an optimist. I sincerely hope that someday I am proven wrong). A River Walk Along Downtown Clinton! Easily obtainable with the right amount of money and permits. I just need to win the lottery first and then I'm on it, I promise. I Want a Flying Car! With as many traffic accidents as we have nationwide, can you just imagine what would happen if citizens had flying vehicles? So with it we would have to have highly regulated technological traffic systems on many levels. Pro: physical infrastructure might no longer be a problem. Con: Hacking into this technological grid system could be, which could be catastrophic. (On second thought, maybe I should just appreciate my old-fashioned little 2013 Chevy Cruz and the fact that Hunterdon County residents can't just fly over my house with impunity). The Return of Mutual Respect! I really want to see US citizens return to the ability to exchange ideas with civility, respect and erudition. For a great (in my opinion) example of this, look up on Youtube: "Noam Chomsky vs. William F. Buckley Debate." These two men couldn't have been more different-minded and each had his flaws, of course, yet here was an intelligent, well-researched dialogue with no insults, histrionics or buffoonery, I miss this. Full storefronts in our local main streets! Including but not limited to: Clinton, Flemington, Highbridge, Califon, Lebanon, Tewkesbury, etc. I find an empty storefront to be a depressing sight and if I were a landlord of some of these buildings, I would make it easy for some pop-ups to come in and take up residence. (Again: I need winning lottery tickets.) Some Instagrammable (did you ever think that would be a real word?) installations would also be awesome in some of these empty stores. Just Google/Image the words "Instagrammable Pop-Ups" and you'll see what I mean. For CTNL to Stay In Business! Print publications have been closing left and right over the last decade yet the Clinton Township Newsletter has survived, thus far. We hope to continue for a long time to come so please we keep reading us, keep advertising with us, and keep patronizing the businesses who keep our publication strong! For our own Ruth Keesing to Stay Strong and in Good Health! Nearing age 91, Ruth is doing better than a lot of people I know who are half her age. She has a Fountain of Youth hidden away on her property, I just know it! My wish is that she will be one of those people who makes headlines for living to be 120 or more. If you met her in person you might believe this wish could easily come true. (And I wish the same for you also, Mom and Dad. I love you!) Great Health and Happiness for my family and yours. (This goes without saying.)
