Matthew Loscialo has Aspergers and ADHD. Matt feels it is important to help these two communities due to the hardships he dealt with growing up. Matt was made fun of, held back in school and bullied and, because of this, Matt tries to schedule anti-bullying speakers and workshops regularly for the LGBTQ and Aspergers communities, as well as anyone who is interested in this topic. Matthew Loscialo started an Asperger Friends group, but it ended when parents said there was no need for this group in Hunterdon County. He now runs the LGBTQ group and has started more chapters at other libraries in NJ. Matt is a PPA award-winning photographer who specializes in landscapes and events. To view Matt's portfolio, visit: www.MatthewLoscialo.com. p a r T n e r s H i p F o r H e a l T H m o n T H l Y s T r e s s r e d u c T i o n T i p s This month, we're looking at how stress affects seniors and how we can manage stress as we age. Coping with stress as we age becomes more difficult for a variety of reasons. Our bodies become less resilient and able to deal with the stress hormones that arise during stressful situations. Sleep difficulties associated with aging contribute to the inability to flush out stress hormones from the day. Unfamiliar stress triggers such as having too much unstructured time or changes in physical abilities mean that stress reduction techniques that may have worked in the past for common stressors won't work anymore. Symptoms of stress may be more physical in nature than during youth. They include headaches, heart palpitations, poor concentration or irritability. When any of these interfere with quality of life, it is helpful to talk to your doctor who can help sort out stress management techniques that may work for you and if therapy or medication may be part of the answer. Maintaining a community during aging is a proven way to stave off stress but may need to be a conscientious decision as aging can lead to isolation. Exercising both the body and the brain improve resilience and can help reduce stress. Lastly, making time for quiet and meditation is important in rounding out the ability to defuse stress in our older years. NEED OR WANT EXTRA COPIES OF CTNL?
