Millions of of people suffer with foot and ankle problems all the time. Many of them go see a podiatrist for evaluation and treatment of these problems. Many times patients need to have foot or ankle surgery to alleviate their pain and to allow them to walk more comfortably. But there are many patients who suffer and do not go see any physician and live with this pain or discomfort. When you go see a podiatrist you will be examined. You will also most likely have x-rays taken. Your podiatrist will then go through different treatment options with you. There are many conservative non-surgical treatments for many foot or ankle problems. This is recommended for you, because having foot or ankle surgery can have a more increased recovery than many other surgeries. Having surgery on your foot requires stitches and can be swollen making it very difficult to go back to a normal shoe and normal activities. Depending upon your work or lifestyle it can take months before you can go back to a normal shoe. It does depend upon what kind of surgery you are having done and how much you are on your feet. It is not recommended to have foot surgery just because you don't like the way your foot looks. You might have a bunion or hammertoe which can definitely distort the appearance of your foot. But it is not worth the trouble of having surgery to fix these problems if you are not having pain. Because if there are any problems or difficulties with healing that may be worse than what you started with. So it is always truly recommended to try or attempt conservative treatments first. Many patients can get relief of pain with proper fitting of shoes and given custom made arch supports called orthotics. Patients also can be given different silicon pads that can help give relief for painful hammertoes and bunions. You should talk to your podiatrist to see if there are any conservative treatments before surgery is decided upon. If you have any foot problems, issues and questions, please contact Howard J.
