This month it's time to look at some ways to ease back into the
school year to make it as stress-free as possible for all members of
the family. It's a fact that this time of year is stressful, but according to the
American Psychological Association, developing resilience as part of a child's
development is the most important factor in overcoming the negative effects of
daily stress. Building resilience starts by providing a sense of security through
established family routines and consistency whenever possible in all aspects of
life, from set meal and sleep times to built-in free times several times a week.
Fostering a close, warm relationship among family members is also important
in developing resilience. Children learn they have people in their life to count
on and start to become able to count on their own judgment and strength
for encouragement in stressful situations. This webpage from the APA has
great information and resilience tips: www.apa.org/topics/parenting/
resilience-tip-tool.aspx. It's worth looking at for a more complete picture
of how to give our children this ability that will serve to decrease their stress
over the rest of their life. Check it out!

We will welcome summer's ghost." ~ Heny Rollins
