These problems can include physical fatigue, decreased productivity and increased numbers of work errors. Many things can be done to reduce these symptoms including wearing the proper eyeglass prescription, changing the workstation setup and taking frequent breaks while in front of the monitor. An eye examination is the first step to reducing strain at the computer. The examination will determine if you need a prescription to help focus on the screen. Tell your eye doctor how often you use the computer at home and at work. Measure how far you sit at your computer so the appropriate prescription can be measured for your eyes. Purchase ergonomic furniture to enable you to position your computer screen 20 to 24 inches from your eyes. The center of the screen should be placed 10 to 15 degrees below your eyes for comfortable positioning of your head and neck. Glare on walls as well as reflections on your computer screen can also cause computer eye strain. Eyeglasses with anti reflective coating will reduce the overall glare. Adjusting the brightness of the monitor so that it is approximately the same brightness as the surrounding workstation may help as well. To reduce your risk of tiring your eyes by constantly focusing on your screen, look away every 20 minutes and gaze at something 20 feet away for approximately 20 seconds. This is known as the "20-20-20 rule". Looking far away relaxes the focusing muscle in the eye to reduce fatigue. Blinking is very important when working at a computer; blinking moistens your eyes to prevent dryness and irritation.
