Intermittent fasting is gaining popularity, but what exactly does it mean?
One regiment of intermittent fasting is time-restricted eating. This regiment
is broken into two segments, the hours a participant can consume any food
or beverage and the hours the participant must fast or cannot consume
any energy-containing food or beverage. The time-restricted trend gaining
popularity is the regiment 8:16, meaning the participant can consume food
in the 8 hour time frame and must be fasting the other 16 hours.
Some of the believed benefits of this regiment include lowered insulin
levels allowing for stimulated fat burning. The fasting portion allowing for
the body to prompt cellular repair processes instead of digestive processes.
It is important to understand that there has not been long term testing
on intermittent fasting, meaning long-term effects are unknown. The shorter
tests of six months have shown no benefit to intermittent fasting compared
to daily caloric restrictions. Intermittent fasting is not recommended for
people who have a previous history of an eating disorder or have a vigorous
exercise routine.
Whenever choosing a diet or making changes to your lifestyle routine,
it is important to consult with your physician and/or an individual who
specializes in nutrition. Also, listening to your body and choosing what is
best for you is crucial when making choices about your health.
