Little things like sponges and plastic containers and old coffee mugs. Here's the scoop: Sponges are great places for bacteria to breed. To kill the bacteria, wet your sponge and put it in the microwave for 2 minutes. If your sponge has bits falling off or has food trapped in the scrubber you just can't get out, then don't bother. It's time to toss it. Check your plastic container tops. If they are warped, the lids won't seal properly. A poor seal can lead to freezer burn and spills and other problems. Put them in the recycling bin and buy some new containers. If you have an old favorite bowl or mug, and if it's chipped, you need to say adios. That broken area can cut your lip or fingers. Plus, if your bowl or cup is an antique, the paint may contain lead. You don't want little flakes of lead in your coffee or cereal. While we're talking about lead, take a good look at the old ceramic items in your kitchen. Ceramic bowls or cups that have a corroded glaze (it looks like the paint is coming off) or are covered with a dusty-looking or chalky gray residue after they have been washed may be glazed with lead. The lead can leach into your food, so stop using them ASAP. We all intuitively know that getting outside and being in nature relaxes us, but only recently has science begun to explain how this works. Multiple studies have shown that being in nature can decrease stress hormones, decrease heart rate and change the brain in ways consistent with calm and focus. This information is coming at a time when more of us than ever are disconnected from nature in our daily lives because our jobs and technology mean we are inside the majority of every day. Experts recommend going for a walk in your neighborhoods, getting near water or going for a hike in the woods…and for maximum benefit, leave the headphones at home and listen to the sounds of nature. Summer is the perfect time and Hunterdon County has over 8200 acres of park space- find out the details at www.co.hunterdon.nj.us/depts/parks/about.html. So, get outside and get destressed! www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2016/01/call-to-wild/ h u N t e r D o N b e h A v i o r A l h e A l t h o F F e r s e v e N i N g p r o g r A M : e x p l o r i N g b i p o l A r D i s o r D e r Hunterdon Behavioral Health Intensive Family Support Services will be holding a special program on Tuesday, July 10 called Exploring Bipolar Disorder.
