Oldwick Community Players will be holding its eighth Summer Acting Workshop from July 9 to 20. The two-week camp for kids ages 9 to 18 will be held at Church of the Holy Spirit located at 3 Haytown Road in Lebanon. The camp is designed to develop creativity, focus, collaboration and confidence on and off stage. Combining theater games, script exploration, monologues and scenes from plays and films, students will learn how professional actors build a character. At the culmination of the two weeks, they will get to demonstrate what they have learned by performing their scene or monologue on the stage in front of an audience of family and friends. This year's workshop will be run by former soap opera actress, Gwynn Press Anidjar. Gwynn was a regular on the long-running ABC daytime drama, The Edge of Night. Gwynn has appeared in more than 10 feature films, and has been directed by such luminaries as Bob Fosse, Jonathan Demme and Paul Mazursky. In theater, she performed Off- and Off-Off Broadway in classics to contemporary works. The camp will run Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm and Thursdays from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. There will be a performance on July 20 at 7:00 pm at the church. The cost of the workshop is $300. Included in the cost of the workshop will be a professional headshot, dinner on the Friday night of the performance and a 2018 OCP membership. There are a limited number of spots available! The deadline to register is June 25. Questions? Email ganidjar@comcast.net. To register or for more info, visit: www.Oldwickplayers.org or OCP - Oldwick Community Players on Facebook. t h e i M p o r t A N c e o F W e i g h t t r A i N i N g A s W e A g e By: Kari Yannarella, MS, ACSM Certified Personal Trainer When most people think of weight or resistance training, they think of the stereotypical large muscled body builders like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Their initial thought is if they start weight training, they will bulk up. That is not the case! Sure, there are ways to increase mass and size, but there are also ways to increase muscular endurance and strength without looking like The Hulk. The truth is, weight and resistance training is a very important part of exercise. As we age, our muscle mass decreases. This process is called Sarcopenia. Sarcopenia starts in our 30's at a loss of 3-5% muscle mass per decade. What does that mean? Less muscle mass means less function and less mobility. This is precisely why we are more prone to fall when we are older. There are many positive effects of weight/resistance training for individuals. First, it increases bone density, which is extremely important for many reasons. After menopause, women lose bone density increasing their risk for osteoporosis. Brittle bones and lack of balance are not a good combination. Another effect of weight/resistance training is that it keeps testosterone levels high, which is important to both men and women. As men age, particularly after 30, they lose about 1% of their testosterone level per year. Men and women can both benefit from keeping their testosterone levels within normal ranges. Testosterone helps us with cognitive function, builds lean muscle mass which increases our metabolic activity (more calories burned!) and helps with bone density. If you are new to weight training, it's good to seek the help of a personal trainer. A personal trainer will set up a routine and assist with correct posture and movement to ensure you perform each exercise correctly without causing injury.
