She is quite a bit younger than I am so thought the word "swell" to be antiquated and humorous. I might have said "okey- dokey", but would probably have elicited the same reaction. Obviously I was showing signs of dementia in the language department. In over nine decades of living I 've heard many words and phrases that have ceased to exist and I'm going to share some of them with Newsletter readers. If everyone is "hunky dory" you know it's a good day. You're probably "living the life of Riley" and dressed in your "best bib and tucker". If, however, you've "goofed up" somewhere I'd strongly recommend you "straighten up and fly right" or be hereafter regarded as a "nincompoop" or, worse, a "knucklehead". I remember riding in my boyfriend's "jalopy". And, when momentarily surprised by someone's actions, I could be heard saying "Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle," or "Gee Willikers!" My grandfather's favorite phrase was "See you in the funny papers!" or "Don't take any wooden nickles!" At the time I was "knee high to a grasshopper". My brother-in-law's mantra was "Do you think the rain will hurt the rhubarb?" "Don't forget to pull the chain!" if you were in our 1930's bathroom and "Don't touch that dial!" in our 1950's living room. Said too often, and "You sound like a broken record." We used to make "carbon copies" but "jumpin' jehosaphat!," that was a long time ago. Maybe "Kilroy was here!" around that century. I was finding myself in a "fine kettle of fish" more often than not."Heavens to Betsy, I've gone on long enough." While we're on the subject of obsolete stuff, do you realize how many names have all but disappeared when naming new babies? How many are christened Phyllis or Mildred? What about Hazel or Delores? And in the male category what happened to Gerard or Milton or Reuben? What I hear now, in addition to all the Ashleys and Tylers, are Apple, Blue Ivy. Scout, Rumer, Moses, Chicago and other strange names that celebrities' children will have to live with forever. Ruth isn't a very popular name anymore but it's still one of my favorites. It's even "okey-dokey" to be Ruth Ella. Just a parting thought: now that it's 2018, I wonder where Superman will find a phone booth? The North Hunterdon High School Parent-Teacher-Student Association is gearing up for the end of the 2017-2018 school year! • Tuesday YOGA is open to the public and still only $5 a class!
