For novices regarding resistance training, machines are often the first
choice. They are seen as (slightly) less intimidating by many and more
user friendly than free weights. And indeed, they do have their place in
a beginner program. By utilizing machines novice lifters can familiarize
themselves with basic body movements. And making a round through
the machine circuit is often enough to give a full body workout, which is
sufficient for most beginners.
They are not without their drawbacks however. A machine forces its
user into a locked movement pattern that may or may not feel natural.
Some people with nagging knee or shoulder impingements, for example,
may well find more relief in using an equivalent free weight, cable or even
bodyweight exercise. When starting out you may find some machines that
you really enjoy and others that you don't like at all; this is normal. Not all
machines (or human bodies) are created equal!
A common myth often heard in gyms is that machines are preferable
because, while using them, "you don't have to think about what you're
doing". However, it is very possible to execute a movement poorly while
seated on a machine. This can lead to a lack of results at best, and injury at
worst. Furthermore, bad habits on a machine (such as not keeping a tight
core, or failure to feel a target muscle engage) can carry over to free weights,
where the injury risk is higher. It is important to concentrate and resist the
temptation to go on "auto-pilot". Gym goers who find themselves unable to
remain still in the position required for the machine or having the weights
slam back into the starting position are using poor form, too much weight,
or both.
As I always tell my clients:
Be in control of the machine. Never let the machine control you.
