These events were part of the nationwide celebration of Catholic education held during the week of January 28 through February 3. The week's theme – "Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service" – highlighted the schools' focus on faith development, academic excellence and dedication to community service. On Thursday, February 1, students attended mass, then gathered together with their Faith Family to complete a community service project, "Blessing Bags for the Needy". ICS Faith Families are cross-grade level groups of students in grades K-8. Each group is named after a Patron Saint and has two adult sponsors. These groups meet monthly and work together on a spiritual activity, inclusive of a service component, building a strong community among themselves. The Blessing Bags were filled with personal items such as ChapStick, gloves, socks, etc. and each bag included an inspirational message from one of our students. Students also gathered with their buddies to make scarves that were added to the blessing bags. The bags and scarves were distributed to the needy in the local community and a few teachers traveled to NYC where they distributed bags to a Soup Kitchen, Covenant House, and numerous people on the streets. "ICS believes in helping people learn to be of service to one another. We are all together on this planet and we must have a mindset that is inclusive, with an attitude that together we will be more whole, but isolated we will be diminished. To this end we appreciate partnering with our surrounding community to help those in need and to recognize the human dignity and self- worth of all people" commented Principal David Stone.
