Y m c a T r a n s i T i o n s T o n e W s W i m P r o g r a m , F o c u s r e m a i n s o n s a F e T Y At the Hunterdon County YMCA, the focus is on making sure everyone in the community is safe in and around water. Under the guidance of Aquatic Director Flora Mannino, more than 30,000 Hunterdon County children and adults have learned to swim at the Y. While swim lessons have been taking place at the Hunterdon County Y for decades, recently the YMCA of USA has rolled out a new curriculum and guidelines for preschool and youth swim lessons. With a focus on water safety and self-survival skills starting with the youngest child in the parent-child program, the new curriculum begins with basic swimming readiness skills and, as results are achieved, progresses to stroke introduction, refinement and technique. At the Hunterdon County Y, the staff have received additional training on the new curriculum and are excited to share this program with the community. Mannino states, "I believe all people can enjoy the health benefits of water at every age and stage of their life and they don't need to be elite swimmers to participate. I started working for the YMCA because I saw it as a place to use my skills and do something I loved. I have stayed because I help the Y make a difference to the children and families we serve." Y Swim Lessons continue to evolve to better meet the needs of the people they serve. The latest curriculum accommodates students of varying abilities to help foster a sense of achievement as swimmers' progress between levels. Through this approach, advanced swimmers flow more easily to higher levels while swimmers who need more instruction can learn at their own pace. The results are more confident swimmers who stick with lessons and develop a love for swimming that can last a lifetime. The Y runs year-round swim lessons for all ages and levels, as well as lifeguard certification. The Y has a variety of new classes starting in January which include Little Mermaid & Mermen, the Mermaid Club, Scuba Certification by Scuba Guru, Triathlon swim training, and a Competitive Clinic. Additionally, the Y hosts free community events including National Learn to Swim Day, the World's Largest Swim Lesson and the 2nd Grade Learn to Swim Program. For more information about any of the new classes or to find the class that's right for you or your child, visit www.hcymca.org or call Ms. Mannino at (908) 483-4924. A confidential financial assistance program is available for community members in need so that no person is excluded from YMCA programs. Financial assistance applications can be obtained at the Welcome Centers of both the Deer Path and Round Valley branches. h u n T e r d o n s Y m P h o n Y P r e s e n T s a c o m P o s e r m Y s T e r Y ! On Saturday, February 3, the Hunterdon Symphony will present their annual Concert for Young People at 3:00 pm at Clinton Township Middle School, 34 Grayrock Road, Clinton. This year they are performing "The Composer is Dead," a murder mystery that introduces the various instruments of the orchestra. This composition, commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony, was created as an orchestral work by Nathaniel Stookey, with narration by Lemony Snicket, and premiered in July 2006. The performance will be followed by an "instrument petting zoo" in the lobby, a popular feature of the children's concerts in the past. Members of the Symphony, many of whom are music teachers, will be on hand to guide young people in trying out various instruments. Hunterdon Music, located in Flemington, is again loaning the instruments that will be available for this hands-on experience. Tickets prices are $10 for general admission and seniors and $5 for children. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door of the auditorium before the concert. Advance sales are available through the group's web site, www. HunterdonMusicalArts.org, or the following area merchants (cash or check only): Califon Book Shop, Clinton Book Shop, Teaberry's Tea Room in Flemington, Minette's Candies or The Book Garden in Frenchtown. To request an accommodation for a disability, call 908.995.7977. In case of snow, the concert will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 4. In addition to his work with the symphony, Conductor Lawrence Kursar teaches instrumental music at Woodglen School in Lebanon Township and plays French horn with the Crosswinds Trio, Main Street Brass Quintet and a number of orchestras in the area. Event is sponsored by Hunterdon Musical Arts, which is funded in part by the NJ State Council on the Arts/ Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, through funds administered by the Hunterdon County Cultural & Heritage Commission.
