You have the power to pick foods that make you healthy, energized and able to enjoy eating. Here are some guidelines to follow to get the most out of your workout. Ideally, you should try to fuel your body about 1 to 3 hours before exercising. Some great food choices include peanut butter with a banana and Greek yogurt with berries. These snacks are packed with rich nutrients to fuel and power you throughout your workout. These choices may vary depending on your tolerance to certain types of foods. If you are working out very early in the morning, aim for an easily digestible carbohydrate and a small amount of protein 30 to 60 minutes before exercising. Good choices include whole wheat bread, peanut or almond butter, Greek yogurt, or a piece of cheese and a fruit. These types of food will provide you with enough fuel to get you through your workout. Just as it is wise to eat before your exercise, it is also important to select appropriate food choices for after. To get the most out of your food options, you must distinguish proteins from carbohydrates. Proteins are necessary to rebuild muscles, while carbs are used to re-stock Glycogen or energy stores in your muscles. During the period known as the "Golden Hour" (15 to 30 minutes post workout) is ideal, muscles absorb the most nutrients and Glycogen is replaced the most efficiently. Whole wheat bread, lean meat, Greek yogurt, Fruit (for example- apples or bananas) and oatmeal are great options. By incorporating appropriate meal selections, you will give your body the necessary fuel and power to sustain you before, during and after your workout sessions. Making smart, healthy choices will keep you heading in the right direction to a healthier you!
