Irma. Maria. These hurricanes caused great destruction across large swaths of the country. The experience of losing your home, your clothing, all of your belongings and being displaced in unfamiliar shelters is the same experience that kids in foster care face. One local organization, Court Appointed Special Advocates of Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties (CASA SHaW), provides advocates in court for these children who help to identify their needs, look for services and find a foundation in this "new normal." To support its child advocacy mission, CASA SHaW is hosting a Comedy Night on November 3 at the Somerville Elks Lodge #1068, 375 Union Avenue, Bridgewater. The event promises to be a fun-filled evening featuring comedians Jeff Norris, Kevin Israel and Peter Sasso. While there is nothing funny about child abuse, these talented performers will share their comedic gifts to help provide these child victims with a voice in court through volunteer advocacy services. The evening begins at 7 pm and will include a cocktail hour with a cash bar, dinner, the comedy show and a 50/50 raffle. Tickets are $60 each and can be purchased via the CASA SHaW website at www.casashaw.org or by sending a check to CASA SHaW, 150 Boulevard, Ste. 3, Washington, NJ 07882. Sponsorship opportunities are available for this event. CASA of Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties is part of a statewide network of community-based, non-profit programs that recruit, screen, train and supervise volunteers to "Speak Up for a Child" removed from home due to abuse or neglect. CASA is the only program in New Jersey that uses trained volunteers to work one-on-one with children, ensuring that each one gets the services needed and achieves permanency in a safe, nurturing home.
