Snyder Farm Open House and Great Tomato Tasting at Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station Become a Rutgers Master Gardener in Hunterdon County! The Rutgers Master Gardener program of Hunterdon County is accepting applications for the new class of 2018, which will begin on September 19. Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 9:30 am to 12:45 pm at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension office located in the Route 12 County Complex. The Rutgers Master Gardeners receive in-depth, hands-on training in horticulture from Rutgers faculty and professional staff. Some topics included in the course are: plant biology, propagation, soil science, disease and pest identification, turf management for home lawns, gardening and environmental principles. Rutgers Master Gardeners are a unique group of individuals who provide outreach programs to home gardeners and their community. Successful graduates become Certified Rutgers Master Gardeners after they complete the course work and volunteer service hours. No previous education in horticulture is required. Any residents who enjoy gardening, have a natural curiosity about their environment and want to make a commitment to volunteer service can become a Master Gardener. Snyder Research and Extension Farm 140 Locust Grove Road, Pittstown, Hunterdon County, NJ 08867 Wednesday, August 30 (Rain or Shine), 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station and Rutgers Cooperative Extension proudly announce the Annual Snyder Farm Open House and Great Tomato Tasting! The event includes the very popular tasting of more than 80 heirloom and hybrid varieties of beefsteak, plum, cherry and grape tomatoes. Other highlights include tastings of a variety of farm grown fruits and vegetables and recipes featuring Jersey Fresh produce. Open House features include the Melda C. Snyder Teaching Garden which showcases demonstration gardens of deer tolerant ornamentals; Blueberries, Hazelnuts, Dogwoods and Hollies from the Rutgers breeding programs; a turf labyrinth; vegetables for small space gardening and an "apple wall" featuring the NJAES Tree Fruit Breeding Program for home orchards. Wagon tours of the farm's research plots will be held throughout the event. Also, chef preparations of several recipes, educational displays from various organizations and fun family farm photo opportunities. Rutgers NJAES faculty and staff and Rutgers Master Gardener volunteers will be available to provide information and answer your gardening questions.
