TheEncouragingWorks.com s i n g i n g i s g o o d F o r y o u r h e a l t h Whether young or old or somewhere in between, recent research shows that singing is good for us, and it doesn't matter whether we're any good at it or not! According to American opera singer Katie Kat, singing is within all of us and is one of the most uplifting things we can do. Singing energizes the right temporal lobe of the brain which is responsible for imagination and intuition. The left side of the brain processes information all day long, so we can nurture our creativity and humanity by singing, and singing in a group is even more effective. Humans have been singing together throughout history. We sing at worship, in school, around the campfire and while traveling. Singing in groups releases stress-reducing endorphins and oxytocin, and synchronizes the heart beats of the singers. Singing together boosts our self-confidence, raises our spirits and soothes our nerves while making us feel energized and connected to each other. Studies indicate that we can benefit from singing even if we aren't any good! Some of us were told at a young age that we were "tone deaf," couldn't sing and that we should be quiet. It's not surprising that we tend to take such harsh criticism personally. Tone deafness means that one cannot recognize a song and is pretty rare. Those who think they are tone deaf are simply not used to using their singing voice. As long as you can talk, with a little practice you can learn to sing and begin to reap the many benefits singing provides. See below for a way to hone your singing skills, make new friends and give back to your community.
