Now that Spring is here many of us will turn our attention to yard
work. With this in mind I offer several thoughts to minimize injuries
from over exertion:
1. Warm up. Warm and stretch those muscles you intend to use before moving
bags of mulch or tilling the garden.
2. Limits. Don't try to get things done in one or two days. Spread the work out
over time. After all spring is three months long.
3. Fuel up. You will need fuel to accomplish the tasks you have planned. Eat a
well balanced meal before starting .
4. Hydrate. Drink plenty of water. Even if you are not sweating your body will
need water to accomplish your goals. Notice I said water not energy drinks and such.
5. Break. Take time to allow your body to recover. Frequent breaks offers a chance
to hydrate, catch your breath and have a snack.
These suggestions are based on 30+ years of Chiropractic practice
here in the Clinton area. They are meant to limit not guarantee well being.
For those of us getting older I remind you to limit your "work" load to match you
physical abilities. Heart attack does not have to be chest pain. As in my case it
was ALL back pain between my shoulders. – James P. Longo,
