These are multi- joint exercises which involve more than one muscle group and can include: squats, deadlifts and pull-ups. By contrast, isolation movements are single-joint exercises and focus on one specific muscle. Examples of single-joint exercises include: tricep extensions, calf raises and leg curls. One advantage of incorporating compound movements into your workout is that it saves you time because it engages multiple muscle groups into one exercise. For example, a squat stimulates the entire leg as well as the core; whereas, an isolation movement only targets one specific muscle. It would take multiple isolation movements to stimulate the same muscles used within a squat. Nonetheless, isolation exercises are excellent for detailing and fine tuning your muscles and should be incorporated into a comprehensive fitness routine. Compound movements also have a greater metabolic effect and hormonal response than isolation exercises. They help increase the release of testosterone, producing an anabolic effect to stimulate protein synthesis and to release growth hormone, which is important for fat burning. Bottom line, use compound movements for overall strength/muscle; use isolation exercises to detail and fine tune your muscles.
