It is a blue, half exercise ball on one side and a flat platform on the other. Depending on the exercise, we use the rounded or flat part of the BOSU ball for the following types of training: 1) Balance Training (static and dynamic): Balancing on the BOSU ball forces our core muscles to work together to stabilize our bodies. While doing lower and upper body exercises with free weights or our own body weight, the core works constantly to adjust and maintain the balance. This is especially useful for older clients who need to reduce their risk of falling and for clients with challenging conditions like cerebral palsy. I have witnessed miracles in the stability and walking balance in those clients. 2) Rehabilitation: The use of the BOSU ball for injury recovery or before and after surgery can significantly reduce rehabilitation time for individuals. Doing exercises on the ball helps prevent and eliminate back pain by strengthening the core muscles, as well as speeding up the recovery time after knee, hip or ankle injuries. 3) Strength Training: The BOSU ball is the perfect tool to do any type of strength training, whether it is for our lower body, upper body or core. Examples of those types of exercises are squats, lunges, planks, bridges and pushups. The ball can be used in combination with free weights, barbells, weighted balls and kettlebells. 4) Plyometric Training, Conditioning and Agility: The workouts can be intensified by jumping and running on BOSU balls. This helps clients with knee issues by reducing stress on the joints. Lining up several BOSU balls in a row and having clients perform exercises on each one is a very efficient method for agility and conditioning training. 5) Sport Specific Training: The BOSU ball exercises can also prepare clients for sports that require balance. It will improve stability needed for individuals who play football, basketball, soccer, volleyball and for individuals who participate in activities such as paddle boarding and surfing. 6) Variation: The main reason why individuals stop working out is because they get bored. By introducing various types of BOSU ball workouts in combination with free weights, gliders or kettlebells, keeps the exercises challenging and interesting. The new and creative training sessions challenge the client to keep them motivated and the workouts innovative and fun. BOSU ball training can be done individually, within small groups and/or class style. Come check out the different ways you can incorporate this type of training into your exercise routine.
