Our minds are racing constantly, and we are often switching our attention back and forth between different activities and tasks. This can be distracting and tiring and, as a result of our constant busyness, we are likely to accomplish less and also create more anxiety for ourselves. How can we stop the "busy mind habit" so that we can feel calm and be able to accomplish what we really need to do without stress? 1. The first step is to simply be aware that you are multi-tasking and dividing your attention. When you find that you mind is scattered and disorganized, and you aren't accomplishing much, stop in your tracks and dump your mind's contents onto paper. Then take time to a prioritize your tasks, slow down and tackle tasks one at a time. 2. Work out your stress with a brief walk, or a workout at the gym. If you're outside, clear your busy mind by noticing the beauty around you. Say to yourself as you are walking, "I want to free my mind of all thoughts, feelings, and disturbing images." 3. Stop the habit of dividing your attention between watching television or listening to music and trying to do a task. 4. Take a few deep breaths to free up your mind and find clarity or meditate for four or five minutes to help clear your mind. Just focus your eyes downward and in front of you with your eyes partially closed.
