The goal is to inspire individuals to rise to the many challenges Hunterdon County faces, and to become engaged on a multitude of fronts. This engagement and community involvement will help preserve our quality of life and move our County forward for years to come. Leadership Hunterdon provide numerous opportunities to grow professionally and develop leadership skills. An important benefit of the program is the monthly engagement with key leaders throughout the County. The Class of 2017 has been traveling through the County meeting with leadership on topics regarding the future of the agricultural, businesses, economic and workforce development, government, transportation, criminal justice and education. We all enjoy working and living here in Hunterdon County. However, it's up to each of us to be engaged to ensure and support the efforts that are working to keep our communities and our County strong. The quality of life we enjoy here in our local communities and County does not happen on its own. It is through the collective efforts of community groups, education, non-profits, government, individuals and business working towards a common goal of that ensures a preservation of this for all. The Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce invites you to join their organization! G u a r d i n G a G a i n s t P h i s h i n G a n d P h o n e s c a m s You've probably heard about the "Can you hear me?" scam. Callers record you replying "Yes" then use that recording later to fraudulently authorize charges. Although this scam has been reported by various news outlets, it has not been verified. However, many other scams are verified and they cost consumers millions annually. While tax season is popular with scammers, anybody can be a victim any time of year. Many people are too embarrassed to report they've been victimized; still the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) Consumer Sentinel Network recorded more than three million consumer fraud reports for 2016, accounting for more than $744.5 million in lost funds. The FTC says imposter scams now outnumber identity thefts when it comes to consumer fraud. Imposters use scare tactics or hardship stories to extort money or personal information. Two of their favorite methods are phishing scams and phone scams. Phishing scams use fake emails or websites designed to look legitimate by duplicating company logos and color schemes and using authentic-looking email addresses. To identify fakes: • Check the email for misspellings. • Pay attention to typos and discrepancies in email and web addresses. If you know the company or agency, access its website through a separate browser to confirm the information. • Scroll your cursor over links to make sure you're being directed to an authentic website (the linked address will appear in the bottom left corner of your computer screen). • When in doubt, delete. Phone scammers use a variety of ruses: You've won the lottery ... You owe back taxes ... You have a computer virus ... Your grandchild has been kidnapped / jailed. To avoid falling victim, remember: • The IRS makes official contact by letter, not phone. • Don't respond using phone numbers or return addresses provided; find the correct contact information through an independent source. • Don't use prepaid cards for payments. They're virtually untraceable. • Technical support representatives won't know about computer problems until they're reported. Never give a stranger remote access to your computer. • Before helping a grandchild in trouble, call his or her parents. Chances are the child is safe at home.
