Music educators have witnessed amazing social and mental growth
among children who study music, either instrumental or vocal, at a
young age. Aside from learning musical skills, positive behavioral changes, more
self-esteem and improved attitudes toward academic learning were direct results
of music activity. Many believe this is the result of "The Mozart Effect".
According to the materials from the Mozart Effect Resource Center,
"The Mozart Effect is an inclusive term signifying the transformational
powers of music in health, education and well-being. It represents:
1. The use of music and the arts to improve the health of
families and communities.
2. The general use of music to reduce stress, induce sleep, or activate the body.
3. The specialized use of music to improve memory, awareness
and the integration of learning styles.
4. The innovative and experimental uses of music to improve listening and
attention deficit disorders.
5. The therapeutic uses of music for mental and physical disorders and injuries.
6. The uses of music to activate creativity and reduce depression and anxiety.
Studies show that playing music early in life helps build the neural
pathways that allow language, memory and spatial development to take
place. Adults may have experienced difficulty trying to learn to play a musical
instrument later in life, possibly because those 'neural pathways' were not developed
as a youth. Encourage your children to be involved in some form of
musical activity at a young age – it will broaden their general knowledge
and will connect those pathways for life. I offer private piano lessons
in my home (Lebanon). Please call Dot Hoeflinger at: 908.287.2504.
