Is it just the abs and back? Actually, the core is much more than that. If you were to remove all four limbs from your body, what is left is your core - so training the core entails a lot more than doing a few crunches! Training your core both in and out of the gym will help you to feel and look better. So how do we do this? Let's start by taking ourselves out of the gym and into our daily lives. If we can focus on and work the core during the course of our day, instead of only while we are in the gym, we can be stronger and look better, without even working up a sweat! So for starters, let's think about our body position while seated. Whether you are sitting at your desk, or driving to work, keep these cues in mind: Pelvic position – imagine your pelvis is a bowl, sitting flat on your chair. Do not tilt your "bowl" forward or back – keep it center and level. Next, place your ribcage directly on top of your "pelvic bowl" and create a connection between the top of your hip bones (iliac crest) and the bottom of your ribcage. Imagine these bones are "knitted" together – this is your rib/hip integration. Then, gently draw your belly button inward toward your spine and hold it there. Feel how your abdominals are contracted naturally! Continue holding this but breathe normally – don't hold your breath! Now move up toward your shoulders and draw your shoulder blades back and down, as if you were sliding them into your back pockets. Elongate the neck and lift your head as if someone has it by a string and is pulling it up to the ceiling. Try making this mental "checklist" as you move throughout your day, correcting your posture and activating your abdominals. Without doing a single crunch, you will help train your muscles to be balanced and strong. Focusing on core concentration will have you standing/sitting taller, looking longer and leaner in no time!
