Travel back in time by visiting the historic Craftsman Farms and Stickley Museum. Gustav Stickley was a visionary spokesman and proponent for the Arts and Crafts philosophy and a major taste maker of his era. His furniture designs in the late 1800s were a radical departure from that of the Victorian era. Craftsman Farms exemplifies Stickley's philosophy of building in harmony with the environment by using natural materials. In 1908 Stickley designed the farm to be self-sufficient, with gardens for vegetables and flowers, orchards, dairy cows and chickens; the produce grown on the farm was used in the restaurant operated by Stickley as part of his furniture showroom and department store in Manhattan. The log house of Craftsman Farms proclaims the romance of our nation's agrarian past. Although large, it is firmly rooted in the ideals and dreams of a simpler age. Before we go to the museum we will stop for lunch (lunch is not included in price at to be announced.) Mayor's Column continued from page 3 • Next to the Ocean State Job Lot, a Planet Fitness gym was approved by the Board of Adjustment and will be opening soon. • Plans are now being reviewed by the Planning Board for the construction of a Chase Bank Branch on the site of the Country Griddle at Clinton Point. • An application to redevelop the vacant TD Bank building on Beaver Avenue (near Belvidere Avenue) as a dental office will be heard by the Planning Board shortly. • The Planning Board is also hearing an application for the construction of a synagogue by Chabad of Hunterdon on Payne Road (across from the recently opened Sweet Melissa's Patisserie) • Council recently approved a bond ordinance for an ambulance, fire department equipment and the replacement of a very outmoded, inadequate and out of code Public Works garage, as well as the development of a long term plan for the overall site. We believe the new facility will allow more work to be accomplished in house at a savings and also improve the availability of equipment for tasks such as leaf/snow removal and typical street repairs. • Finally, regarding open space, we are pleased to announce that we have agreed to acquire and preserve the 84 acre Kaufelt property, which adjoins the Marookian open space property on the west side of Rt 31. These two parcels run from Regional Road to Allerton Road and complete the open space buffer/view shed of this part for the Township. In addition, now that the Township has acted to fully conform to the Highlands Regional Master Plan, thus reducing development pressures, we will be looking to increase emphasis on improving public access to our existing open space holdings. These improvements may include additional trails and parking, as well as better access to the bulk of Windy Acres. Beyond participation from various Township committees, we will invite participation from North Hunterdon High School and other stakeholders. As always, I'd like to thank the Council, the Township employees, our volunteers and our professionals for partnering to help make our Township the great place it is. I mention particularly our Township Administrator, Marvin Joss, who recently announced his intention to retire in March after 11 years of service to our community. In closing, 2016 has been a busy year for Mayor and Council and, for 2017, we have many projects in the works which aim to keep Clinton Township an excellent place to live, learn, work and play. Respectfully, John Higgins, Mayor
