Sometimes pain can continue longer than expected despite medical
treatment and become "locked In". Pain can persist because of fatigue, stress, and
biochemical and neurological changes. Bilateral stimulation (BLS) using EMDR can be
used to reduce or eliminate pain.
EMDR is a safe and effective application for pain management. It simply
involves instructing the clients to focus on their pain while simultaneously
concentrating on either audio tones, tapping, or eye movement. The BLS
stimulates the part of the brain where pain and stress are stored and reduces the levels
of excitation of the brain associated with pain. Clients are asked to think about the
physical or emotional pain that they would like to relieve and find a memory and image
that represents the worst pain they have experienced. They are asked to concentrate on
the memory of the pain and how it feels and to hold it in their mind while the therapist
applies bilateral stimulation (BLS).
The client is asked to simply "let whatever comes up happen". The brain
is stimulated where pain and stress are stored and as a result it reduces the levels of
excitation in the brain that are associated with the pain. As a result, the client's pain is
significantly reduced. For a free consultation contact Lyn Siegel MSW, MPH,
