Gemologist ◆ Custom Jewelry Designing and Restoration Benchmark moments in our lives that mark special occasions create some of our most cherished memories. Weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and the birth of a child are often celebrated with the gift of jewelry. It is this sentiment that gives jewelry a lasting value far beyond its monetary cost. Jewelry is special because it can be enjoyed every day and still last for a generation or more (try that with your refrigerator). A little TLC goes a long way in insuring that your jewelry will become a family heirloom! Here are a few helpful hints to help keep you sparkling and secure: • Try to avoid swimming with your jewelry. The chlorine in a pool will slowly attack and deteriorate gold. In the ocean, it's just too easy to lose something in the surf (experience speaking). There's nothing more heartbreaking than seeing a fish swim by with your bling. • Pearls are easy to care for and can last a lifetime. Just keep them away from cosmetics and hair spray as those chemicals will dull their beautiful luster. For cleaning, simply use a damp cloth and gently wipe each pearl. Lastly, if you can move each pearl between the knots in the necklace, it's time to have them re-strung. • Virtually all diamond rings can be cleaned with jewelry cleaner from your favorite local jeweler (that's us, right?). In a pinch, an old soft toothbrush and mild detergent will work wonders. Be careful though as stones that might have loosened over time from wear can come out during cleaning. Some colored gemstones like opal require special handling and may best be left to the pros. • Have your fine jewelry professionally cleaned and inspected at least once a year. Everything from people to cars need a checkup from time to time to keep them tip top and looking spiffy. Your jewelry is no exception. Prongs wear and stones can loosen up over time. A visit to your favorite local jeweler (do we have to ask again?) can identify and resolve any issue that might become a problem down the road. By the way, all repairs at KMD are done in house. • Even with the utmost care, bad things happen to good people. Your most valuable jewelry should be insured against loss and your Insurance company will require a written appraisal. Ideally this is performed by a GIA Gemologist that is trained and experienced as an Appraiser (we have one of the best in the business on staff). There's a whole lot more to tell you about, but we don't own the Newsletter, so space is limited. You'll just have to visit Kristopher Mark Designs located at Old Highway 22 in Clinton (right next to the fire house) or call us at: 908.735.9695, or visit us online at: www. KristopherMark.com.
