That could be a sign of something more serious than annoying junk mail. Statistics show 1 in 40 families with children under 18 had at least one child victim of identity theft.* This crime creates a magnitude of problems for adults, but when the victim is a child the consequences can be even worse. Identity theft is often detected through credit report checks or alerts, but children generally don't have credit reports. They don't apply for loans or credit cards, or make purchases that warrant credit checks. So in their case it can take years, if not decades, to realize a crime has occurred. By then, the child's credit is ruined and the thieves are long gone, along with your chances for compensation. Parents need to be diligent in protecting their children's identity. • Keep identification papers (Social Security cards, passports, insurance cards, etc.) secure. • When filling out forms, question the need for the information; if you aren't comfortable with the answer, don't provide the information. • Speak quietly when passing on information in a public place, like the doctor's office. You never know who's listening. • If you can, establish a credit report for your child and put a freeze on it. This way, you'll be notified if attempts are made to obtain credit in your child's name. (About 20 states have laws permitting parents to do this; some credit reporting agencies will allow it regardless of the state's law.) The steps you take to protect your child's identity today can make a big difference in your child's financial life tomorrow. – Victor Rotolo *Source: The Javelin Strategy & Research's 2012 Child Identity Fraud Report LAW FIRM THE ROTOLO 502 U.S. 22 Lebanon, NJ 08833 908∙534∙7900 www.RotoloLawFirm.com Victor A. The CEA/Johanna Foods Turkey Trot 5K run and 2M walk in Flemington will be celebrating its 24th anniversary on Thanksgiving Day, November 24! Last year 5,938 participants from 29 states, the District of Columbia and Canada, France, Netherlands and the UK got in the Thanksgiving spirit by being a part of this invigorating tradition. Proceeds from this festive event benefit the Center for Educational Advancement (CEA) whose mission is "To facilitate career pathways and community employment for people with disabilities." Online registration for this NJ Thanksgiving tradition, the largest event of its kind in the region, is now open at runsignup.com/Race/NJ/ Flemington/CEAJohannaFoodsTurkeyTrot. Register online and save $5 over paper registration. The Turkey Trot 5K run will begin at 9:30am on Thanksgiving morning. Runners will be timed using a B-tag attached to the back of their bibs. Winners will be determined by clock or gun time, which means the first person to cross the finish line is the winner. There are a total of 67 categories of winners, including male and female, different age categories and teams. The Fitness Walk will start after the runners clear the starting line (about 9:40am) and has been extended to be a two mile course. The Fitness Walk, a non-competitive event, is perfect for those who want to show their support for CEA and "walk up" an appetite in a low impact way with friends and family members. If you are not able to run or walk up an appetite you can still participate in the event voted Best Fundraiser by Hunterdon Happenings by volunteering and helping bring this exciting event together! For more information about volunteer opportunities for you, your family or your group, please contact Eddie at eschell@cea-nj.org or call CEA at 908-782-1480, ext 239. People who are unable to join the Turkey Trotters in Flemington this Thanksgiving can still show their support for CEA by registering for free to collect pledges from friends and family. All are welcome to do this now by simply registering as a donor, setting a pledge goal, then emailing a notice to personal networks with the direct donation link to their Turkey Trot pledge page. This gives everyone a chance to participate in Turkey Trot, assuring that CEA receives the support to help people with disabilities find financial independence through sustainable employment. Sponsorship opportunities are filling up quickly, but are still available at a variety of levels for organizations that would like to promote their business and be a part of the Turkey Trot excitement. For sponsorship or program advertising information please contact Eddie Schell: CEA Event Coordinator, 908.782.1480, ext. 239 or email: eschell@cea-nj.org. Proceeds from the Turkey Trot support CEA and The CEA School. Founded in 1970 CEA has been providing a pathway to employment, job coaching and career development for people with disabilities as well as academic and transition to adulthood programs for youth. "As we celebrate our 46th year of service, CEA and The CEA School continue to provide vital resources to over 200 people with special needs in our community annually," commented Michael Skoczek, CEA President and CEO, and Turkey Trot Race Director.
