Let me share with you key areas that will help you with this journey. Removing the negativity or feelings of failure you may have trying to attain an objectified vision of fitness is very important. We are all different and that's the true beauty of this whole thing we call life. Stop comparing yourself to something you once were or something you see. Instead, focus on how you feel and who you can become: fit, strong, happy, healthy and perfectly imperfect! First rule - be kind to yourself. If you have a day when you haven't had the chance to exercise and maybe made poor food choices, realize we as humans all experience days like this. Don't allow this to bring you down for the whole day or whole week for that matter. Acknowledge the setback, try to identify why it happened in the first place, learn and move on from it. You are human, and an all-or-nothing approach will not work here. Secondly - be accountable and honest with yourself. Find a system that works for you. Meeting a buddy at the gym or on the trail can make exercise more fun, write your goals down, sign up for a specialty class or try one you have never done before. Planning a bike ride with family two times weekly, signing up for a 5K run and any other activity you plan ahead, gives you goals to work towards. Finding new ways to put yourself out there more often will likely cause you to want to try new things regularly! Lastly - eat to perform. Food is essential for purposeful living. Be smart and honest with yourself when planning meals; really consider if the food on the plate is going to make you feel good and provide the STEADY energy you need for the day. Move your body. We are cellular beings in need of constant regeneration for zest and quality of life. Every little activity counts. Embrace the journey; ups and downs are normal and there is no finish line. Celebrate what your body can do and steer away from the negativity that you must punish yourself for what you ate the night before, today at the gym. Sure, if you want to go hard on those squats, have at it, but do it because you CAN.
