If your household water comes from a private well, it is not tested by any state or local authority. Well water tests can be expensive, but Clinton Township residents may have their drinking water tested for coliform bacteria and nitrates for $60. Additional testing options are also available. The well-testing kits contain easy-to-follow instructions and containers approved by a state-certified laboratory. Kits may be purchased Monday, September 12 through Friday, September 16, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at MSI Plumbing, 1109 Route 31 South, Lebanon. Water samples may be dropped off at MSI's offices on Monday, September 19, from 8:00 am to 9:30 am. No cash will be accepted; checks only. For further info., contact Mara Tippett at 908.234.1852, ext. 401 or email: welltesting@raritanheadwaters.org. Safe drinking water is essential to good health, and testing well water at a certified lab is the only way to know whether water from a private well is safe. Both human-caused and naturally occurring contaminants are often found in private wells. Nitrates and bacteria, which can lead to immediate and serious health conditions, may be found in well water as a result of a poorly performing septic system or a nearby agricultural source. Two naturally occurring elements, arsenic and radon, are also commonly found in well water in northwestern New Jersey. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends that all homeowners test their well water for contaminants annually. About Raritan Headwaters Association: Since 1959, RHA has been working to address water quality issues and has served as an effective advocate for conservation throughout the 39 communities in Hunterdon, Morris, and Somerset Counties that make up the Raritan Headwaters watershed region. The 470 square mile watershed plays a critical role in meeting the demands of more than 1.5 million residential, commercial, agricultural and municipal water users within the region and beyond, into NJ's urban areas. Clinton Township Residents May Have Their Well Water Tested in September "(Summer) Holidays are enticing only for the first week or so. After that, it is no longer such a novelty to rise late and have little to do." ~Margaret Laurence A g i n g i n p l A C e by Anne Thornton, President, MSI Plumbing & Remodeling Most of us want to stay in our homes as long as possible as we age. Here are some ideas to think about in making age-appropriate bathroom updates in your home. Since the bathroom is the most common site for slips and falls in your home, consider these additions and changes to your bathroom for long-term safety and ease-of-use. • Install grab bars in the tub and shower. They come in all colors and styles. Slip resistant flooring also comes in all colors and styles. • A curbless or walk in shower is another way to limit thresholds and steps. Inside the shower, install an adjustable height, hand-held shower hose for convenience. And, remember to make sure the faucet is pressure-balanced to maintain steady water temperature and prevent scalding. • For sinks, single lever handles, rather than separate knobs or handles, are also easier to use. • Install a comfort height toilet with a seat height of 17-19", rather than the standard 14-16". By implementing a few of these ideas, you can be sure that your home is safe for you as you age in place!
