1 5 S e p t e m b e r 2 0 1 6 Rd V Scho Oh, those lazy, crazy, hazy days of summer! It has been hot and we have been busy getting all the classrooms ready for our fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students! Each year we welcome our new 4th graders and those families who have moved into the Clinton Township School District. We are also happy to welcome back those familiar now 5th and 6th grade students and their families. August 31 provided a chance for students to visit Round Valley School, meet with their new teachers, visit with their former teachers and get ready to start new memories! Each September we focus on the Word of the Month ~ Responsibility. It is wonderful to see students put our Words of the Month into action. We recognize their accomplishments during our All School Meetings, which take place once a month. All grades will be actively participating in hands on science activities that correspond with the Next Generation Science Standards. We will also be exploring Problem-Based-Learning activities in all grade levels. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to connect subject knowledge and learning through the experience of solving open-ended problems. ton Tohip Midd School Use extra caution when school is in session! Here are some helpful safety tips from the National Safety Council: When selecting a backpack, look for: An ergonomic design. The correct size: never wider or longer than your child's torso and never hanging more than 4 inches below the waist. Padded back and shoulder straps. Hip and chest belts to help transfer some of the weight to the hips and torso. Multiple compartments to better distribute the weight. Compression straps on the sides or bottom to stabilize the contents. Reflective material. The CDC suggests these steps to keep kids safer on the playing fields: Require the use of protective gear, including helmets, wrist guards and knee or elbow pads. Make sure sports protective equipment is in good condition and worn correctly. Teach children skills such as proper tackling techniques in football and soccer. Allow kids time to gradually adjust to hot or humid weather and schedule water breaks. Model good behavior by following rules and communicating positive safety messages. Getting on the Bus: When waiting for the bus, stay away from traffic and avoid roughhousing or other behavior that can lead to carelessness. Do not stray onto the street, alleys or private property. Line up away from the street or road as the bus approaches. Wait until the bus has stopped and the door opens before approaching the bus. Use the handrail when boarding. Behavior on the Bus: If seat belts are available on the bus, buckle up. Don't speak loudly or make loud noises that could distract the driver. Stay in your seat. Don't put your head, arms or hands out the window. Keep aisles clear of books and bags. Get your belongings together before reaching your stop. Wait for the bus to stop completely before getting up from your seat. Before your children head out, remind them of these year-round safety tips: Never walk while texting or talking on the phone. If texting, move out of the way of others and stop on the sidewalk. Never cross the street while using an electronic device. Do not walk with headphones on. Be aware of the surroundings. Always walk on the sidewalk if one is available; if a child must walk on the street, he or she should face oncoming traffic. Look left, right, then left again before crossing the street. Cross only at crosswalks. We are looking forward to welcoming new and returning students and staff to CTMS for the 2016/17 school year! The Clinton Township Middle School motto of "Community & Teamwork Motivate Success" will continue to be our focus for building community spirit. We have a number of newly assigned staff members this year and are delighted to welcome them to our Clinton Township Middle School family. Staff biographies will be in the next issue of Clinton Township News! At CTMS we offer many sports and after school activities that are designed to encourage creativity and promote wellness. Our Fall sports season will soon be underway with students participating in Soccer, Volleyball and Cross Country. Students will produce the CTMS morning announcements in our TV Studio and share information ranging from the daily announcements, local weather and after school opportunities. In the "Explorations" courses, all CTMS students participate in Financial Literacy, Cultural Collaboration, Tech Literacy and Internet Safety and Health and Wellness classes. Collaborative activities that involve building Community and Teamwork and Character Education will also take place throughout the year.
