1 8 S e p t e m b e r 2 0 1 6 www.ClintonTwpNewsletter.com Cadette Girl Scouts Olivia Artale, Emily Davis and Nicole Dowd, from Troop #80055, earned their Silver Award by creating a Reading Garden on the grounds of the Hunterdon Regional Community Health Office and Yesterday's Treasures Thrift Shop, which are operated by Hunterdon Healthcare System. Over the past year, they each spent well over 50 hours planning, digging, shopping, planting and maintaining the garden. The girls began contacting local businesses last April for donations. They identified assorted perennials and shrubs that would be deer resistant and thrive in a partly shaded area. In total, they received over 30 perennials, 10 shrubs, 12 bags of mulch and $200 in gift cards to complete the project. In addition, the girls coordinated and mailed personalized Santa Letters to over 50 children last December to offset the costs of this project. The planting of the garden was completed in June. The girls have been maintaining the garden all summer and will continue to do so until it is established. To complete the project, the girls contacted Boy Scout Troop 194 in Flemington to see if they were interested in building benches for the garden and, fortunately, Boy Scout Robert Vanacore had constructed two cedar benches and three cedar planters for his Eagle Project in 2015. Robert generously donated the benches for placement in the Reading Garden and the three planters to be placed along the shop's entrance way. The girls thank Vanacore, Robin Cronin from Rutgers Landscaping & Nursery for her guidance, advice and the company's generous donation to this project, and all the local businesses that were so generous in donating plants and supplies to make this garden possible including: Mancini Landscaping, J&J Landscaping, Country Garden Shed, the Garden Gate, Mendham Garden Center, Four Seasons Greenery, Arvin Garden Center, Tractor Supply Co., Lowe's Home Improvement and Home Depot. Artale, Dowd and Davis will be entering Hunterdon Central Regional High School in the fall of 2016. The Silver Award is the second highest award of the Girl Scouts of the USA, and the highest award that a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. Only Cadette Scouts ages 11–14 or in grades 6-8 can earn the Silver Award.
